Jesus our Foundation

(2 minute read)

It’s that time of year. Where summer fun gets tucked away and the structure of Fall begins to dominate. I like routine and knowing what my weekdays hold. More than the love of my routine though, I love seeing families figure out their routines as well. New grades mean new classmates, teachers and school challenges. This is amazing fodder for great conversations before (or during;) Sunday School. New age stages create opportunities to develop God-given talents, whether they be in sports, music, art etc. These kids are brimming with possibilities! But, where does church fit in?

Perhaps the start of your Fall programming has been a welcomed surprise - families are showing up! Your programs are full and you have the volunteers to make it work. Perhaps the start has been slow - your littles are still feeling anxious and there’s interest but it’s going to take time. And, perhaps you’re needing to once again revamp what has been into something that can be done. But, where does church fit in?

I grew up going to a beautiful brick building at least twice a week with an added possibility of going twice on Sunday. To me, going to church was a part of my weekly fabric. The number of times I went, sometimes begrudgingly, isn’t what made it ‘church’ for me. It was the people and the familiar faces. They called me by my name. I had teachers who seemed to be the oldest people who ever lived to hip young adults that took the time to check in on me. Church isn’t a building or the amount of programs you offer. Church is a community centred on Christ alone. This is a place of worship and prayer. The programs you have will absolutely add to anyone’s experience but they mean nothing if Christ is not at the centre.

Hebrews 13:8 tells us that ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.’ This is our foundation. Whatever this Fall brings you, build your foundation only on Christ - not on numbers, what has been or even what you hope to bring. Bring it all to God. Lay it at His feet and remember you too are a child of God! We have much to be thankful for. Our Loving Saviour has withstood all the changes this world throws at us. Thank you Jesus for being our foundation!
