Those Famous Last Words

(3 Minute Read)

By Heidi Schartner

“I’d never do that!”

Famous last words for many but it is a phrase each of us has said at one point or another. Pre-adulthood, I said I’d never drink coffee. Famous last words. Pre-kids, I said I’d never wipe their face with schpuck. (Slang for spit. Still gross no matter what the term.) Pre-dog, I said I’d never own a dog, never mind fall in love with her.

The thing with proclamations is that we tend to make them very loudly and often with a lot of emphatic hand gestures. More often than not, we also make them without a whole lot of experiences behind them. The ‘I’d never do that’ claims are really ‘I think I’d prefer to not’ claims. Our experiences shape us. They change who we are as people and as a result, can change our perspectives.

I should add a disclaimer here… I don’t like change. I really enjoy routine and knowing what’s to come. However, the good Lord Almighty knows this about me and continues to pull me close as He pushes me to study deeper. By deepening our faith, we will continue to experience the changes God has in store for us. These changes aren’t silly ‘I’d never’ claims. No, these changes are the ones that deepen our faith, strengthen our resolve and spur us to continue to be a light in a world that so desperately needs it.

We’re on a journey

These changes are also vital for our little learners to see. Our ministry kids need to see that we too are on a faith journey that continues to discover God’s love, grace and forgiveness. As leaders, it is our job to lead and guide. But as Christians, it is our job to continue our journey and allow others to be a witness to it.

Matthew 28:19-20 says, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

That is the Great Commission and that is what Jesus calls each of us to do. To be a witness and bring others along for our journey, whether they are your volunteers, children or the families they come from. At the time of writing, Awesome KidMin Conference 2022 is a few short weeks away. We encourage you to be a part of this and continue your faith journey. Together, we are all learners and together we can walk this faith journey together.
