Remember, Don’t Forget

Before I had kids or was involved in children’s ministry, I was already immersed in pre-school songs because of my fantastic nieces and nephew. While I was in my early 20s, I was able to sing along with most of their favourites, but there’s only one I remember to this day - ‘Go Go Joshua’ by Ms Pattycakes. We’d march around the living room singing and acting out the lyrics, over and over (and over) again, until the VHS tape needed a break. Or, maybe that’s what I said needed the break but that is neither here nor there. It is a few decades later and still when I read anything out of the book of Joshua, this song comes to mind. (Side note, Bible songs form deep roots in our little ones’ hearts. Repetition is good!!).

Over the next few months, our devotionals are going to dig deeper into Joshua 1:7-9. Our next conference (March 7 and 8) will be focusing specifically on Joshua 1:9 but there’s just too much wisdom in these few verses that we felt it important to really spend time on them. For this devo, I’ll be focusing on Joshua 1:7

“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the laws my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.”

My 14-year old is an exceptional human being. He is super funny, smart, a deep thinker and never shies away from asking tough questions. But. He is also in (what I hope is only) a stage where he forgets things. Often. The problem is, he’s not the only one in our family who does. Yours truly is also in (what I hope is only) a stage where I forget things. Often.

There are times where we laugh about it. Then, there are the times when we’re both frustrated by the brain lapses. Turns out we’re not the only ones who can forget. While it is frustrating when we misplace keys, sunglasses or homework, it isn’t the end all be all. There are truly important things we need to have ‘written on our hearts’ (Hebrews 8:10b) and Joshua knows this. He is addressing the Israelites and his speech is earnest. He’s repeating what they can do to ensure success.

  • Be strong

  • And very courageous

  • Be careful to obey ALL the laws given

  • Don’t turn either right or left

What can we take from Joshua’s words? Being a follower of Christ isn’t easy. We are in a battle and we will need to be brave. What battles are you fighting now? Remember you are not alone. Those of ministry work know it can be a daily (hourly?) grind. But you are fighting on the winning side.

The LORD is my protector; he is my strong fortress. My God is my protection, and with him I am safe. He protects me like a shield; he defends me and keeps me safe. ~2 Samuel 22:2-7

Secondly, remembering God’s Word takes effort. It is conscious decision to follow His Word. But also, we don’t get to cherrypick what works for us and what doesn’t. The laws given are for our benefit, even if we don’t see that all the time. We need to stay on the narrow path (Matthew 7:13) and by His guidance, we can do it. I think this point is one of the most important truths we can teach our kids today.

My friends, as you prepare for VBS, summer get togethers or even your Fall programming, be courageous. Our kids are searching for truth. How incredible that we have the honour of being a part of their journey… a journey where you are making an eternal difference. Thank you for all you do for your KidMin community. Much of it will go unnoticed but your Heavenly Father is so, so pleased with wonderful you.

Blessings to you all.
